It was blogged before I started my solve, so there's no point in me writing annotations.
I see I got one wrong. I wrote MAXI in at 24d without thinking too much about it.
The clue is
Make heavy demands on current vehicle (4)
and MAX sounded heavy enough - but of course it's TAXI .
Regarding the setting: if you have to resort to the obscure tree NGAIO, it means that you weren't prepared to go back to the beginning to avoid using this silly word. The clue was clearly pointing to the answer, so that's not the problem. My point is that your grid need not require having resort to the ... 'ngaio'. Whatever that is.
