I was quite pleased with having solved this and got the solution here by 0744, as noted below ... until I looked at the Times for the Times website and found that George Heard had posted at the same minute as me - 1244 BST - but he had included all of the solutions, plus the clues, plus his clever notes. So much for my pathetic attempt to being clever :/
