Winchester Gaol Collected by Bob Copper in about 1954, from Victor 'Turp' Brown, of Cheriton, Hants: see Chapter Eighteen, pp. 151-168, of Songs and Southern Breezes for the details; and the appendix for these words.
There's a new county gaol in Winchester, Hants,
Where the young prosecutor is going to provance,
Because he'd no money, no friends to prevail,
Because he'd no money they sent him to gaol. The turn-key came around the locks to unfold,
We stood there a-shivering and a-shaking with cold
We stood there a-shivering and we couldn't get no rest
And we jumped out of bed almost starving to death. The turn-key came around just twice in the day,
And bread and cold water was all he could say,
Just bread and cold water and you couldn't get enough,
Without any taste of the good liquor broth. There's a new county gaol in Winchester, Hants,
Where the young prosecutor is going to provance,
And if you don't believe me and think this ain't true,
Just you go a-poaching and then you will know.
